Pavement rutting measurement

What is pavement rut depth? This test method describes the procedure for the measurement of the depth of the rut at a chosen location in a pavement surface using a straightedge and a gauge. The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The device also measures crossfall and curve radius.


Comparison measurements are conducted yearly before the measurement period. Designed to obtain more accurate and consistent assessments of pavement surface conditions, the system can potentially eliminate the need for network-level, manual, subjective visual assessments. A heavily rutted pavement should be investigated to determine the root cause of failure (e.g. insufficient compaction, subgrade rutting , poor mix design or studded tire wear). Good No ruts can be observed in the pavement and there is no impact on road users. Fair Ruts in the pavement can be observed. Pavement with deeper ruts should be leveled and overlaid. The term stuck in a rut can be used figuratively to refer to a situation in which, as time progresses, the situation is unable to be changed or steered in a desired way.


Pavement rutting measurement

Determine Rutting from transverse pavement profile measured using all non-contact laser sensors over a width of at least 3. Correct the transverse extent and the Rutting measure where non- pavement features are measured (e.g. kerbs, shoulder encroachment). For asphalt pavements, rutting is one of the most serious forms of pavement distress, and severe rutting is a significant cause of pavement failure. To prevent rutting , the pavement structure needs to provide sufficient support for the roadway surface, while the design and construction of the asphalt mix must create a pavement that can resist deformation. Rutting is a critical defect on pavements that can lead to hydroplaning and accidents.


In this study, a system is proposed to quantify the rut depths autonomously by utilizing an inexpensive red green blue—depth (RGB-D) sensor. To this en a cart is designe built, and used to mount an array of RGB-D sensors for data collection purposes. D range data and obtain accurate rutting measurements.

TxDOT and four vendors—Dynatest, Fugro, Pathway Services, and Applus—collected measurements. The research team assessed each system’s accuracy and repeatability by performing two evaluations. The laser rut measurement system (LRMS) is a transverse profiling device that detects and characterizes pavement rutting. Using the latest and most advanced laser scanning technology the LCMS can automatically identify a wide variety of pavement defects.


Ruts are particularly evident after a rain when they are filled with water. There are two basic types of rutting : mix rutting and subgrade rutting.
