Aec postal vote

Electors who are registered as general postal voters will be sent ballot papers as soon as practicable after the declaration of nominations for a federal election, the issue of writs for a federal referendum, or according to the legislative timeline for a state or local government election (contact your state Electoral Commission for more details). Electoral law allows political parties or candidates to mail postal vote applications to you along with candidate and political party election campaign material. If you have received a postal vote application sent by a political party you do not have to use the application. If you complete the application and return it to the party or candidate, they must then forward your form to the AEC for processing. After an election is announce you can apply for a postal vote to have your ballot papers sent to you in the mail.


You can apply online via the AEC website, or by completing a postal vote application form available from AEC offices at election time.

People who have already received their postal voting pack in the mail from the AEC are also being urged to act quickly. If you have already applied for and received your ballot paper, please complete and post it back to the AEC as soon as possible,” Mr Austin said.


The cost of processing a postal vote is 3–times higher than for an ordinary vote cast on election day or an early vote in person, which means an unnecessary loss of taxpayer money. It leads to a higher spending of taxpayer funds: if the form-sending candidate is an MP, the taxpayers pay for the whole form-printing and mailing enterprise. If you are a registered general postal voter , you will automatically receive a postal vote pack in the mail. If you are registered as a silent elector, and you are not a general postal voter, you can complete a postal vote application or vote in person at an early voting centre or on by-election day.

You don’t need to give a reason. The Australian Electoral Commission ( AEC ) is responsible for providing the Australian people with an independent electoral service which meets their needs and encourages them to understand and participate in the electoral process. If you have recently completed an enrolment form please allow a few days for the AEC to receive your form , process it and update the electoral roll. If you recently enrolled or changed your address online you can check the progress of your enrolment by using the receipt number you were provided with.

The deadline for the receipt of postal vote applications passed on Wednesday, so the final total of applications received is 18or 14. This data is subject to regular updates. Postal votes are available to those who will be absent from their electoral division through travel, or who those are unable to attend a polling booth due to illness, infirmity, approaching childbirth, caring responsibilities, reasonable fears for their safety, religious beliefs, imprisonment, status as a silent elector, or employment reasons.
