How to order a certificate?

Certificates cost £and are sent days after you apply. If you do not have a GRO index reference number, you’ll have to pay £extra for each search. As you know, we do not charge the local.


Full certificate with a GRO index reference supplied: £11. GRO to index on their behalf a fee of £ 3. However, for a limited time only non-certified copies of some births, marriages and deaths can be order in PDF form at a reduced cost of £6. You can find the GRO index references by logging on to the GRO online ordering service and accessing the GRO online indexes.

A PDF will cost £6. You can order civil registration records from the General Register Office ( GRO ). The General Register Office holds a central copy of all birth, adoption, marriage, civil partnership and death registrations for England and Wales. Register on the General Register Office ( GRO ) website to buy a special certificate to mark a silver (25th), ruby (40th), golden (50th) or diamond (60th) wedding anniversary. This replaces the previous fees of £ £and £10.


You should be aware that there are a number of web sites that offer to supply certificates , however what they do is get the certificate from the GRO for a premium over the GRO cost. Unless they offer some added value that you require there is no benefit in using such services. Any personal data you provide to GRO will be handled in compliance with current UK data protection legislation.


The price of a death certificate ordered online from the General Register Office will go up from the current rate of £9. If you would like to order a certificate by post you can download an application form and guidance note via GOV. Changes to birth, death and stillborn certificates England and Wales. A certificate ordered from GRO will cost £– GRO cannot process certificates at reduced fees. Also there will be a £3.


Any death certificates requested from GRO relating to deaths in the emergency period will be charged at £but we will arrange a refund of the £7.

The National Archives also holds archived records that are free to view. The information (Volume and Page Number) obtained from the search result can then be used to request a certificate. Most, but not all, local registration offices are still supplying certificates , and are generally much quicker than GRO at the moment ( although no PDF option).
