Americano origin

It is the direct descendant of the Milano-Torino which consisted of Campari, the bitter liqueur from Milan (Milano) and Punt e Mes, the vermouth from Turin (Torino) but lacked soda water. The story goes, according to many sources including Lee Jollifee, PH that soldiers stationed in Italy during WWII were looking for a way to make the strong espresso they found there taste more like the coffee they were used to back in the States.
